Castlebury Barn is situated just outside the village of Membury in East Devon. Set in a beautiful rural location nestled into the Blackdown Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural beauty, with the counties of both Dorset and Somerset a stones throw away you will be spoilt for choice for what to see first! Perfectly situated with the Jurassic coast nearby, country pubs and stunning walking and cycling on our doorstep.
Visiting the Jurassic Coast
Use Castlebury Barn as your base to explore the renowned beautiful Jurassic coast, just an easy 20 minute drive away. The coastal towns of Lyme Regis, Charmouth and Seaton are well known and steeped in history. Branscombe and Beer are also beautiful fishing villages with seafood aplenty. So, whether it's fossil hunting, watersports, great food or walking, this area offers it all.
Places to Visit / Things To Do
There are plenty of easily accessible attractions to see and do. For the children there is Pecorama at Beer, a ride on the tram from Colyton to Seaton beach, the donkey Sanctuary, Axe Valley wildlife park and all the watersports you could wish for. Riverford Canteen and Cookery School are just a short distance away as well as Lyme Bay winery an award winning local wine producer. Forde Abbey House and gardens are stunning for a day out. Check out the ‘East Devon Way’ for great walking and cycling routes through the stunning countryside towns and villages. The famous ‘Golden Cap’, the highest point on the Jurassic coast and England’s only natural World heritage site is nearby and is a must see. Our nearest city is the Cathedral city of Exeter, just a 45 minute drive away, with great restaurants, shopping and a lovely quay offering a variety of watersports. Whatever your interest, we have it all!
Eating & Drinking
We have a bountiful supply of great food producers on our doorstep. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s Riverford Canteen is in nearby Axminster and Mark Hix oyster and fish house is in Lyme Regis. There are also some great local pubs on our doorstep, we would personally recommend The Cotley Inn at Wambrook, The Anchor Inn at Seatown and The Candlelight Inn at Bishopswood, all offering great local food. We would also recommend Millers Farm Shop and The Barley Mow farm shop, both just 3 miles away, for a superb supply of local meats and cheeses as well as freshly baked bread.
Walks and Wildlife
Castlebury barn is itself surrounded by beautiful walks and a map of the local footpaths and beauty spots is provided. The Jurassic coast boasts part of the South West coastal path route and is absolutely breathtaking. We also have a variety of both river and woodland walks as well as the National Trust’s ‘Golden cap‘, a challenging walk to the highest point on the Jurassic coast and England’s only natural World Heritage site. Directly behind the barn is Membury castle, an ancient iron age hill fort with 360 degree views from the top. In this rural location there is plenty of natural wildlife and binoculars are provided for you to sit and watch from the comfort of the barn.
